Between 2010 and 2014 the unfounded rate in Waterloo Region sat at 27 per cent – eight per cent higher than the national average at the time. Since then, there’s been a substantial shift in the way Waterloo Regional Police Services handles sexual assault investigations. By 2019, the number had dropped to eight per cent.
The experience of a Fanshawe College student late last month illustrates the dangers women, on or near post-secondary campuses, face on a regular basis.
