Fall has officially arrived at the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market as they kicked off the season with their fourth annual Harvest Hoedown on September 19th. The festival offered something for everyone – from live music and trivia to line dancing, unique vendors, and even the chance to ride a mechanical bull.
Attendees were encouraged to dust off their cowboy boots and show up dressed in country attire. Many were wearing plaid shirts, denim and cowboy hats, adding to the festive spirit of the evening.
“My favourite part of the day so far has been the line-dancing,” said Rachel Munro, a respiratory therapist at Guelph General Hospital and regular shopper at the St. Jacobs Market. “The instructor is so motivating and makes sure all ages and skill levels can follow along—the only thing missing is for me to get some cowboy boots.”
Munro shared that beyond all the fun activities, she came to enjoy the cozy atmosphere where people are given the chance to spend time with family and friends.
“I came with my best friend. We both love the fall season, and this is the first autumn event we are participating in this year,” said Munro. “I’m looking forward to making cozy memories and having fun with her tonight and throughout the season.”
According to Megan Malcolmson, director of operations at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market, approximately 2500 people attended this year’s harvest hoedown.
“It just gets bigger and bigger each year,” said event coordinator Shannon Hall, who has been involved with the festival since day one. “It’s one that started relatively small, but we loved it and wanted to keep it going.”
Local band 8 Second Ride returned to the hoedown stage this year, delivering a lively lineup of country hits that kept the dance floor packed from start to finish.
“It’s an awesome community vibe,” said Hall. “At the end of the night, the dance floor in the front of the band is full of people, and it’s my favourite time of the night.”
The Harvest Hoedown marks the beginning of a festive fall lineup at the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market and according to Hall, there’s a lot more seasonal fun to look forward too.
Next up is Pumpkin Palooza that will take place on October 25th, offering family-friendly activities including pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, and festive fun for all ages.
