The Coalition of Muslim Women of KW invites members of the larger community, including those who are not of the Muslim faith, to a
Tastes of Ramadan Iftaar Dinner.
The event, which will educate those who want to learn more about Ramadan while also showcasing foods and Ramadan traditions from around the world, is being held at Rim Park, 2001 University Ave. E., Waterloo, on Saturday, May 18 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The event, including the dinner, is free of charge but requires advance registration.
Ramadan is a month where Muslims fast; they don’t drink or eat between dawn and sunset. Fasting is really important during this time because it allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and brings them closer to God.
There are Five Pillars of Islam and fasting is one of them. The other pillars are prayer, faith charity and making the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Iftar is when Muslims break their fast, eating an evening meal at sunset.
Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection as well as prayer, and donating to charities and doing good deeds. It is also a time to spend with family and friends.
The Coalition of Muslim Women of KW will accept donations for GIVE 30 which is a national initiative to end hunger in Canada. Those who fast during Ramadan can save the money that they would usually spend on coffee and food and give it to a food bank.
Uzma Bhutto is the operations co-ordinator for the coalition.
“I encourage the large community to please bring your families and friends and your neighbours to attend our event. I am a 100 per cent sure that once you attend you will be hooked and you will really have a great time.”
According to a statement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ramadan
“honours the values at the heart of Islam – like compassion and service to others. It reminds us to give generously, and put the needs of others before our own – this month, and throughout the year.”
