Soccer players of Conestoga, don’t put away your cleats just yet. The indoor soccer season is upon us and Conestoga is looking for both men and women to fill two teams of 12 players each.
Indoor soccer is a faster, higher-scoring game than outdoor soccer and has a few very distinct rule changes from the outdoor game. For one thing each team has six players on a side, five forwards and a goalie. Because there are fewer players on the field, the game gives players more space to dribble and create scoring chances usually resulting in much higher scores than the outdoor game.
One rule change from the outdoor game is that players cannot throw the ball in when the ball goes out of bounds. The ball must be kicked in so that those players playing forwards never use their hands. Other than that the rules are basically the same as outdoor soccer.
Everyone is welcome to come to the tryouts which will be held this week. Players who want to have fun and play competitive soccer should attend.
Aldo Krajcar, head coach of both teams, said he is hoping to have a larger turnout than last year particularly on the men’s side.
“In men’s (outdoor) soccer we didn’t have a very good regular season,” Krajcar said. “So I hope we get a couple of good players in the school who are hiding and want to come out.”
Tryouts will be held tomorrow (Jan. 7) and 14 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for women and Jan. 9 and 16 in the same time slot for the men. Practices will be held regularly on Wednesday nights from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for women and 6:30 to 8 p.m. for men.
The team will not play a regular season format, but instead will travel around Ontario playing in different tournaments hosted by other colleges in the OCAA. In addition, toward the end of the semester, there will be a regional tournament followed by a provincial tournament. Any questions about tournament dates or any other inquiries should be directed to Krajcar at aldo.k@rogers.com.
