Waterloo Regional Police arrested a man who barricaded himself in his apartment early Tuesday afternoon.

Police spent several hours trying to convince the man to leave his apartment, located at Charles Street and Stirling Avenue in Kitchener, after various reports the man had a weapon.

Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute was placed on lockdown as police closed off streets near the building.

Police entered the building at approximately 1:30 p.m. and the man was arrested, unharmed, around 2 p.m.

One man who lives above the suspect said he had a cigarette with him before the incident this morning. Various tenants called the police when the barricaded man was reportedly seen with a sword.

Police have not released the name of the man.
