A special program is in its second year at King Edward Public School — one that is not only helping its students improve their English and reading skills, but is building their confidence as well.

It pairs a young student with a mentor “buddy” who is a volunteer student from Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School — basically next door to King Edward Public School. The same students meet every Tuesday and Thursday, and the older students coach and help the younger students with pronunciation and spelling.

Many of the younger students say their favourite part of the program is seeing their buddy twice a week, and reading and comprehension marks are up across the board as a result of the program.

A win-win for everyone involved.
